Brookings

City and administrative headquarters of Brookings County, east-central South Dakota, on the Big Sioux River, 80 km/50 mi north of Sioux Falls; population (2000) 18,500. It is a trade centre for the surrounding livestock-farming, dairying, and grain-producing region. Medical and dental equipment, aluminium windows, doors, awnings, concrete products, and fabricated steel are manufactured.

It was founded in 1879 and is the seat of South Dakota State University (1881).
