Broonzy, ‘Big Bill’ (1893–1958)

US musician. A versatile guitarist, he was the top-selling male blues singer of the 1930s. His autobiography, Big Bill Blues, was published in 1957.

He was born in Scott, Mississippi. He began his prolific recording career in 1926. He performed at ‘Spirituals to Swing’ at Carnegie Hall in 1938. He conducted several European tours in the 1950s.
