Brother Jonathan

Personification of the USA, corresponding to the English John Bull. The phrase has now been superseded by Uncle Sam. The name is believed to have come from Jonathan Trumbull, governor of Connecticut and friend of the first president, George Washington. It was first used by British soldiers evacuating Boston in 1776 (applying it to the New England militia).
