Brough

English theatrical family, descended from Barnabas Brough (died 1854), who became a playwright in later life. His sons William Brough (1826–1870) and Robert Barnabas Brough (1828–1860) were also writers, specializing in burlesques and pantomimes. Robert's daughter Fanny Whiteside (1854–1914) was a popular comic actor. The youngest son, Lionel Brough (1836–1900), made a name as a comedian in such roles as Tony Lumpkin (in Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer) and the Shakespearean Sir Toby Belch and Touchstone. His daughter Mary Brough (1863–1934) was also an excellent player of comedy, and in her later years appeared in farces at the Aldwych Theatre, London. Her brother Sydney Brough (1868–1911) was also an actor.
