The populous east is lined with beachfront resorts, including Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, and Lighthouse Point. Just inland are a variety of residential suburbs, such as Coral Springs, Tamarac, and Plantation.

The Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation (population (1990) 500) occupies the western area of the country and parts of adjacent Palm Beach and Hendry counties.
