Brown, Earle (Appleton) (1926-2002)

US composer. He pioneered graph notation (a method of notating controlled improvisation by graphical means) and mobile form during the 1950s, as in Available Forms II (1962) for ensemble and two conductors. He was an associate of John Cage and was influenced by the visual arts, especially the work of Alexander Calder and Jackson Pollock.

Twenty-Five Pages for one to twenty-five pianos (1953); Available Forms I, Available Forms II for 98 players and two conductors (1961-62); Light Music for electric lights, electronic equipment, and instruments (1961); Sign Sounds for chamber ensemble (1972), Windsor Jambs for soprano and orchestra (1979); Folio II for instruments (1970-93); Sounder Rounds for orchestra (1982); Tracer for ensemble and tape (1984).
