Brown, Hallie Quinn (c. 1845-1949)

US educator and social reformer. Teaching in a wide range of educational institutions, she spoke publicly on black American culture and campaigned for temperance. A founder of the National Association of Colored Women, she became its president 1920-24, remaining honorary president until her death.

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a child of former slaves. She graduated from Wilberforce University in 1873.
