Brown, Jerry (1938- )

US Democratic governor and candidate for presidential nomination in 1976 and 1992. He served as secretary of state 1970-74 and governor of California 1975-83. He campaigned as a political ‘outsider’, stressing the need to eliminate the influence of big business in government.

He was born in San Francisco, the son of California governor ‘Pat’ Brown. He studied to become a Jesuit 1956-60, but instead he became a lawyer in 1964. When governor, he turned down many privileges of office; he would later spend some time in Japan studying Zen Buddhism.
