Brown, Mather (1761-1832)

US-born itinerant painter of portraits and miniatures. He studied with Gilbert Stuart in 1773, before leaving for England, where he remained, studying under Benjamin West in 1781, and painting austere portraits, including those of King George III, the Duke of York, and Charles Bulfinch in 1786.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts.
