Brown, Thomas Edward (1830–1897)

Manx poet. He published a number of poems, the chief of which were in Manx dialect, including Fo'c'sle Yarns (1881), The Doctor and other Poems (1887), The Manx Witch (1889), and Old John (1893).

Brown was born in Douglas, on the Isle of Man. Educated at King William's College and at Christ Church, Oxford, he took a double first and became a fellow of Oriel. After a short period as a headteacher at Gloucester, he became a teacher at Clifton public school. His collected poems were published in 1900.
