Brown, Tina (1953- )

English writer and editor. She began her career in 1978 as a columnist for Punch magazine and became editor-in-chief of Tatler magazine in 1979. After moving to New York in 1983, she was editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair 1984-92, and the New Yorker, traditionally the publisher of the best of US writing, 1992-98.

Brown immediately implemented changes to the New Yorker that brought censure and praise, enlivening the magazine through the use of more colour and increased focus on current events, and improving its circulation by over 25%. In 1998 she became chair of Talk Media, a venture of Miramax film company, launching Talk magazine (1998-2001) and Talk Books. She went on to host a weekly political chat show, Topic [A] With Tina Brown (2003-05).

Her books include the play Under the Bamboo Tree (1973), Loose Talk (1979), and Life as A Party (1983).

She was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, and educated at Oxford. In 1981 she married the English journalist and Sunday Times editor Harold Evans.
