Browne, George, Count de Browne (1698–1792)

Irish soldier. He entered the service of the Elector Palatine in Germany in 1725 owing to his exclusion, as a Catholic, from appointments in his own country. He subsequently served with the Russian army, quelling a revolt against the Empress Anna Ivanovna. Later he fought in the Seven Years War, and was made major-general, then field-marshal, by Tsar Peter III. Browne was born in Camas, Limerick, Ireland.
