Brownsville

City in southern Texas, USA, on the Rio Grande just before it flows into the Gulf of Mexico, 212 km/132 mi south of Corpus Christi and 8 km/5 mi north of Matamoros, Mexico; seat of Cameron County; population (2000) 139,700. It is a port of entry to the USA, and serves as a commercial and processing centre for the irrigated farmlands of the lower Rio Grande Valley; industries include electronic and aerospace equipment, petrochemicals, and food products; tourism is also important.

Originally founded as Fort Taylor in 1846, Brownsville was an important Confederate port during the Civil War; it changed its name when it was incorporated as a city in 1850. It is the seat of the University of Texas-Brownsville (1973).
