Brownwood

City and administrative headquarters of Brown County, central Texas, on Pecan Bayou, 103 km/64 mi southeast of Abilene, in the Central Hills; population (2000) 18,800. It processes pecans, cotton, grain, peanuts, and livestock. An industrial and retail centre, it also has oil and natural gas wells and railway workshops, and manufactures chemicals, glass, bricks, and various other products.

The city is home to Howard Payne University (1889), with its Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom.
