browserIn computing, any program that allows the user to search for and view data. Browsers usually do not permit the user to edit data, but are sometimes able to convert data from one file format to another. Web browsers allow access to the World Wide Web. Microsoft's Internet Explorer was the leading Web browser in 2006, acting as a graphical user interface to information available on the Internet - reading HTML documents and displaying them as graphical documents which may include images, video, audio, and hypertext links to other documents. The first widespread browser for personal computers (PCs) was the text-based program Lynx. Browsers using graphical user interfaces became widely available from 1993 with the release of Mosaic. Some Web sites contain special pages that might contain animation, 3D scenes, or a particular kind of audio file. To display these kinds of effects, the basic browser technology needs to be enhanced using plug-in technology, such as the Macromedia Flash plug-in which can display sophisticated animations and multimedia effects. When continuing assaults from viruses, spam, pop-up ads and adware made Internet use almost intolerable in my teacher-son Karl's K-12 school in Massachusetts, the staff changed Web browsers from Internet Explorer to Firefox and the problems decreased significantly. To locate all the available browsers, type Internet Browsers into Google or any search engine. The announcement follows a federal judge's finding that Microsoft illegally used its monopoly in personal-computer operating system software to monopolize the market for Web browsers. |
