Bruce, William Spiers (1867–1921)

Scottish explorer and geographer. In 1892–93 he took part in a Dundee whaling expedition to the Antarctic, during which he obtained a valuable set of meteorological observations, and in 1896–97 he joined F G Jackson's expedition in Zemlya Frantsa-Iosifa. He was leader of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902–04, which carried out oceanographic work in the Weddell Sea and put part of Coats Land on the map.

In later years he conducted a series of scientific expeditions to Svalbard.
