Bruce Peninsula

Major promontory some 100 km/60 mi in length, extending north-northwest from southern Ontario into Lake Huron, and separating the southwestern part of Georgian Bay (which lies to the east) from the main body of the lake. This sparsely inhabited region is known for its rugged natural beauty, especially the cliffs and inlets on the Georgian Bay side. The main population centre is at Tobermory, on the far northern tip of the peninsula.

Part of the peninsula's backbone is formed by the Niagara Escarpment, along which the long-distance Bruce Trail footpath (length 720 km/450 mi ) runs to its terminus at Tobermory. Before reaching the peninsula, the trail passes through the Niagara Peninsula, Hamilton, the valleys southwest of Toronto, the Caledon Hills, the Beaver River valley, and Owen Sound (the southern gateway to the Bruce Peninsula). Tobermory is the site of the Fathom Five National Marine Park, which incorporates 19 islands and surrounding waters popular with divers. There is also a ferry link from Tobermory to Manitoulin Island, to the northwest.
