Bruch, Hilde

Bruch, Hilde (1904-1984)

German-born US psychiatrist and author who emigrated to New York City in the 1930s. She taught at Columbia University from 1934 to 1964, while practising psychoanalysis. She is best known for her work on eating disorders, including The Golden Cage: The Enigma of Anorexia Nervosa (1978).

She was born in Duelken, Germany. She studied medicine at the University of Freiburg and was active in psychology research and paediatrics until the Nazi occupation of 1933, when she left for the USA. In 1965 she joined the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
