Brundage, Avery

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Brundage, Avery (1887–1975)

US sports administrator. He was president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) 1952–72. An indomitable believer in pure amateurism, Brundage fought unyieldingly against the infiltration of commercialism into the Olympics, an inevitable tendency that accelerated greatly after his retirement.

He was born in Detroit, and proved to be an accomplished athlete, competing in the decathlon at the 1912 Olympic Games, and winning the US all-round track and field championship 1914, 1916 and 1918.

A prominent figure in sports administration for 60 years, he was president both of the Amateur Athletic Union of America, 1928–1935, and the US Olympic Committee, 1928–1952. He was elected to the IOC in 1936 partly as a reward for his efforts to stop a US boycott of the Berlin Olympics, becoming a vice-president 1946 and president seven years later.
