    0.07 sec.

Brunetière, (Vincent de Paul Marie) Ferdinand (1849-1906)

French writer and critic. In Le Roman naturaliste/The Naturalist Novel (1883) he attacked the French realist or naturalistic writers, especially those of the school of Emile Zola. He wrote several critical works on French literature.

Among these are Etudes critiques sur l'histoire de la littérature française/Essays in French Literature: A Selection (1880-1907), L'Evolution des genres dans l'histoire de la littérature/Evolution of the Genres in the Literary History (1890), L'Evolution de la poésie lyrique en France au XIXe siècle/Evolution of Lyric Poetry in France in the 19th Century (1894), and Nouveaux essais sur la littérature contemporaine/New Essays on Contemporary Literature (1895).

Brunetière was born in Toulon. He began to write for the Revue des deux mondes in 1875, and became its editor in 1893. From 1886 to 1895 he was French-language professor at the Ecole Normale. His conversion from materialism to Catholicism caused a sensation throughout France.
