Brunfels, Otto (1489-1534)

German physician and botanist. His Herbarum vivae eicones (1530-36) was one of the first printed herbals. It is particularly interesting because it was illustrated - by Hans (II) Weiditz - with plants drawn from nature rather than from earlier drawings. In spite of his artist's originality, Brunfels still concentrated on the southern European plants familiar to traditional herbalism.
