Brunfels, Otto (1489–1534)

German physician and botanist. His Herbarum vivae eicones (1530–36) was one of the first printed herbals. It is particularly interesting because it was illustrated – by Hans (II) Weiditz – with plants drawn from nature rather than from earlier drawings. In spite of his artist's originality, Brunfels still concentrated on the southern European plants familiar to traditional herbalism.
