Bruno, Frank (1961– )

English heavyweight boxer. He won the World Boxing Council (WBC) world title after defeating Oliver McCall in 1995. Bruno had made three previous unsuccessful attempts to win a world title, against Tim Witherspoon in 1986 (World Boxing Association (WBA) title), Mike Tyson in 1989 (undisputed world title), and Lennox Lewis in 1993 (WBC title). He lost his WBC title to Mike Tyson in 1996. An eye injury forced him to retire from boxing in August 1996.

Bruno was born in London, England. He won the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) championship in 1980, and in 1982 fought his first professional fight, defeating Lupe Guerra by a knockout in the first round. In 1985 he won the European heavyweight championship against Anders Eklund. After his second world title defeat in 1989 Bruno retired, but returned to boxing in 1992. Having retired for a second time, he has found some success in entertainment, notably in pantomime.
