Brush, Charles (Francis) (1849-1929)

US engineer and inventor. His Brush arc light was adopted in 1879 by the city of Cleveland, and soon went into use worldwide. This arc light made his fortune.

He was born in Euclid Township, Ohio, the son of a farmer. He studied mining engineering at the University of Michigan, then worked as a chemist and an iron merchant, before leaving business to devote full time to his electrical inventions. He devoted the later years of his life to theoretical research and philanthropy.
