Brussilovsky, Evgeny (1905–1981)

Russian composer. In 1933 he was commissioned to do research in Kazakh folk music and went to live at Alma-Ata, the capital of Kazakhstan. There he wrote operas in the national idiom.

Having lost both his parents, he joined the army at 16, but was released in 1922 in order to develop his talent at the Moscow Conservatory. He was expelled in 1924 for non-attendance, due to serious illness, but although very poor, managed to go to Leningrad and induced Maximilian Steinberg to teach him at the conservatory there.
