0.01 sec. |
Bruton, John Gerard (1947- )Irish politician, leader of the centrist Fine Gael (United Ireland Party) 1990-2001 and prime minister 1994-97. The collapse of Albert Reynolds's Fianna Fáil-Labour government in November 1994 thrust Bruton, as a leader of a new coalition with Labour and the Democratic Left Party, into the prime ministerial vacancy. He pressed for greater urgency in negotiations for a permanent Anglo-Irish peace agreement. He left office after the 1997 elections, when a Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats government was formed.
