Bruttii

A people who inhabited the ‘toe’ of Italy (modern Calabria). Their territory, to which the name Italia was first applied, was known as ager Bruttius or simply Bruttium. Although they had many contacts with Greece, in the 4th century BC the Bruttii joined the neighbouring Lucanians in war against the Greek colonies.

They also helped Pyrrhus against Rome, which later deprived them of half their territory; and they subsequently lost their independence altogether because they supported Hannibal.

Together with Lucania, Bruttium formed the third Augustan regio (adminstrative district) of Italy.
