Bryan

City and administrative headquarters of Brazos County, east-central Texas, USA; population (2000) 65,700. It is located 140 km/87 mi northwest of Houston, in a region that produces cattle, sorghums, poultry, cotton, and other crops. Bryan processes agricultural goods and its other industries include the manufacture of aluminium products, chemicals, concrete, electrical equipment, furniture, rubber goods, and dairy products.

The educational complex at College Station, 11 km/7 mi to the southeast, strongly affects the city's life and economy; Texas A & M University also operates a nuclear research centre on the former Bryan Air Force Base. Settled in the 1820s by followers of the US pioneer and political leader Stephen F Austin, Bryan was for many years a centre of large cotton plantations.
