Bryars, (Richard) Gavin (1943– )

English composer. He studied music privately and has been professor of music at De Montford University from 1985. His earlier compositions were influenced by the ideas of Erik Satie and John Cage; he later turned to Greek myth for inspiration.

Medea, (1984, after Euripides).

Orchestral

The Sinking of the Titanic (1969), My First Homage (1978), The English Mail-Coach (1980), Pico's Flight (1986), The Green Ray for saxophone and orchestra (1991).

Chamber

Homage to Vivier (1985) for small ensemble; two string quartets (1985, 1990).

Other

Cadman Requiem (1989); The Black River for soprano and organ (1991).
