Bacillus thuringiensis

Soil bacterium that produces pesticidal toxins. Once in the gut of an insect larva, the bacteria produce crystalline toxins that eventually cause the gut to become fatally paralysed. A gene from B thuringiensis was inserted into US maize plants in 1995, to produce genetically modified maize with built-in resistance to the European corn-borer.

Dr Muhammad Amin Athar briefed the minister about various research activities being under way at the centre working on BT cotton, DNA diagnostics, bio-pharmaceutical, DNA forensics, stem cell technology and genetic diseases.
During the 2002-- 2008 period, there has been 150- fold increase in Bt cotton and five million farmers were growing it in the country.
The delegates also stressed that we need to increase production of cotton and BT cotton may be introduced for the purpose.
