Bubka, Sergey Nazarovich (1963– )

Ukrainian pole vaulter who achieved the world's first six-metre vault in 1985. He became world champion in 1983, and was unbeaten in any major event from 1981 to 1990. He broke the world record on 32 occasions. He retired in 2000 after the Sydney Olympics, having failed to reach the final. In the same year, he was elected to the International Olympic Committee as a representative of the athletes, and also joined the executive board of the Ukrainian Athletics Federation.
