Buchanan, George (1506–1582)

Scottish humanist. He wrote Rerum Scoticarum Historia/A History of Scotland (1582), which was biased against Mary Queen of Scots.

Forced to flee to France in 1539 owing to his satirical verses on the Franciscans, Buchanan returned to Scotland in about 1562 as tutor to Mary Queen of Scots. He became principal of St Leonard's College, St Andrews, in 1566.
