Buckfastleigh

Town in Devon, England; population (2001) 3,620. It is situated 11 km/7 mi northwest of Totnes, in the valley of the River Dart. Nearby is Buckfast Abbey, which lies on the site of a medieval Cistercian monastery and was built by French Benedictine monks between 1907 and 1938. The town is the terminus for the Dart Valley Railway.

Fossilized remains of prehistoric animals have been found in local caves. Buckfastleigh is the headquarters of the Devon Speleological Society (for the study of caves).
