Buckhaven and Methil

Town and burgh in Fife unitary authority, Scotland, on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, 7 km/9 mi east of Glenrothes; population (2001) 16,400. The port of Methil caters for timber and fertilizer imports and the export of coal, and is an oil platform construction centre for North Sea oil developments. Buckhaven was formerly a fishing village and holiday resort.

The towns of Buckhaven and Methil are part of an area called Levemouth, formed through the expansion of a number of adjacent towns and villages during the 1920s and 1950s. Buckhaven once boasted the second-largest town fishing fleet in Scotland, but red coal, a mica-rich, red-coloured shale, washed ashore blocking the harbour.

Features include Buckhaven Museum and Methil Heritage Centre.
