English naturalist. In 1848 he went to London to study medicine, and was house surgeon at St George's Hospital in 1852–53. At about this time he made the observations recorded in his Curiosities of Natural History (1857–72). He was on the staff of the Field from 1856–65, and in 1866 he established his own periodical, Land and Water. In 1865 he established a piscicultural exhibition at the South Kensington Museum.
