Buckner, Simon Bolivar, Jr (1886–1945)

US soldier. In April 1945, he commanded the US 10th Army in the invasion of Okinawa, the last great battle on the Pacific front in World War II. He was killed in action on June 18 while inspecting frontline positions there.

He was born in Munfordville, Kentucky, the son of the US Civil War Confederate general of the same name.
