Budge, Donald

    0.01 sec.

Budge, (John) Donald (1915–2000)

US tennis player. He was the first to perform the Grand Slam when he won the Wimbledon, French, US, and Australian championships all in 1938. In the men's game, only Rod Laver (in 1962 and 1969) has emulated this feat. A tall, right-handed player, renowned for his rolling backhand shots, Budge won 14 Grand Slam events in only three years, 1936–38, before turning professional in November 1938. In 1937 and 1938, at both the Wimbledon and US championships he achieved the ‘triple crown’ of winning the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles titles. In the Davis Cup, he won 19 of his 21 singles matches, and six of his eight doubles matches.
