Buenaventura

Port on the Pacific Coast in the department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, 145 km/90 mi northwest of Cali by rail; population (1996) 266,988. Buenaventura is Colombia's most important port after Barranquilla on the Caribbean Sea. It is connected by rail and road with Bogotá (720 km/447 mi) via Cali. The main exports are coffee, sugar, cotton, hides, gold, and platinum. The climate is hot and humid, with a mean temperature of 29°C and an average annual rainfall of 6,600 mm/257 in.
