Buganda

Buganda

Either of two provinces (North and South Buganda) of Uganda, home of the Baganda people and formerly a kingdom from the 17th century. The former kabaka, or king, Edward Mutesa II (1924–1969), was the first president of independent Uganda 1963–66. He was deposed as monarch in 1966.

His son Ronald Mutebi (1955– ) is sabataka (head of the Baganda clans) and became king when the monarchy was restored in 1993.
