Bukavu

Port in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on Lake Kivu; population (1994 est) 201,600. Mining is the chief industry. It is the capital of Kivu region and is in one of the most densely populated parts of the country with a diverse agricultural hinterland.

Economic activity has been severely disrupted in the mid-to late 1990s as a result of the civil war in the country and disturbances in neighbouring Rwanda and Burundi.

Bukavu -- An air of mystery still hangs over the death of Archbishop Christophe Munzihirwa Mwene Ngabo, a decade after his death on October 29, 1996, during a military attack on the city.
The aircraft was attempting to land in Bukavu when it clipped a mountain and went down in a forest 9 mi.
Reports said three men in uniform invaded his home in Bukavu, the capital city of the South Kivu province, in eastern Congo.
