Bukavu

Port in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on Lake Kivu; population (1994 est) 201,600. Mining is the chief industry. It is the capital of Kivu region and is in one of the most densely populated parts of the country with a diverse agricultural hinterland.

Economic activity has been severely disrupted in the mid-to late 1990s as a result of the civil war in the country and disturbances in neighbouring Rwanda and Burundi.
