Bulfinch, Charles

Bulfinch, Charles (1763–1844)

US architect. He became one of New England's leading architects after his design for the Massachusetts State House was accepted 1787. His designs include the Hollis Street Church, Harvard's University Hall, the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Connecticut State House. In 1817 he was appointed architect of the US Capitol by President Monroe.

Born in Boston, Bulfinch was educated at Harvard and travelled widely in Europe.

Involved in the municipal affairs of Boston, Bulfinch served on its board of selectmen 1791–1817.
