Bungert, August (1845–1915)

German composer. He studied at Cologne Conservatory and in Paris, and produced his first (comic) opera at Leipzig in 1884. His ambition was to build a special theatre for the production of his tetralogy on the model of Bayreuth.

operas Die Studenten von Salamanka (Leipzig, 1884), tetralogy Homerische Welt (Kirke, Nausicaa, Odysseus Heimkehr, Odysseus Tod, produced at Dresden 1898–1903), ‘mystery’ Warum? Woher? Wohin?; incidental music to Goethe's Faust; symphony Zeppelins erste grosse Fahrt; Tasso, Hohes Lied der Liebe, Auf der Wartburg for orchestra; piano quartet: piano pieces; songs.
