Bunker, Ellsworth

Bunker, Ellsworth (1894–1984)

US diplomat and executive. He was ambassador to South Vietnam during the crucial stages of the Vietnam War 1967–73, and the chief negotiator of the Panama Canal treaties 1973–78, which became controversial during the 1976 presidential campaign.

He was born in Yonkers, New York. He was an executive in the sugar industry 1927–66, and became a diplomat in 1951. He was ambassador to Argentina, Italy, India, and Nepal 1951–61.
