bunyip

Imaginary water-dwelling creature of Aboriginal legend in eastern Australia, said to haunt rushy creeks and swamps. It is said to make loud booming noises and to eat humans, principally women and children. The legend may owe its origin to the appearance of stray seals in inland rivers. The word has been adopted in Australian English to mean ‘impostor’.
