Burbank

City in southwestern California, 16 km/10 mi north of Los Angeles, in the eastern San Fernando Valley; population (1990) 93,600. It is both a residential suburb and a centre of the entertainment and aerospace industries; Walt Disney Productions, Warner, Columbia, and NBC have offices and studios here, along with a division of Lockheed Aircraft. Plastics and cosmetics are also produced.

In 1887 Dr David Burbank bought the land on which the city was built. It had become a centre for the film industry by the 1930s, and its aircraft industry and the city itself underwent rapid growth during World War II.

City in northeastern Illinois, a residential suburb immediately southwest of Chicago, 16 km/10 mi southwest of the Loop (the central business district of Chicago); population (1990) 27,600. The Chicago Midway Airport lies to the north.

BURBANK - A proposed compromise on construction of a Los Angeles sewer line through Burbank is expected to be rejected by the Burbank City Council tonight because of local residents' concerns about noise, odor and traffic.
The Hilton Burbank Airport & Convention Center has completed a $5 million refurbishment program, according to Joseph Kruvi, general manager of the 486-room hotel.
Burbank transit vans pick up seniors at their front doors and youngsters compete on park water polo and swim teams, thanks to a city budget that, on a per capita basis, nearly doubles that of neighboring Glendale.
