Burchuladze, Paata (1951- )

Russian bass. He made his debut in Tbilisi in 1975, as Gounod's Mephistopheles, and after studying in Italy made his British debut in 1983, in The Dream of Gerontius at the Lichfield Festival. In 1984 he made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, as Ramfis in Aïda, returning as Khan Konchak in Prince Igor and Boris in Boris Godunov (1990-91). He sang at Salzburg in 1987, as the Commendatore, and at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1989, as Rossini's Basilio. In 1994 he sang Boris at the opening of the new Israeli Opera, in Tel Aviv.
