Burdekin

River in Queensland, Australia; length 689 km/428 mi. It rises in the north of the Great Dividing Range and runs southeast, parallel to the coast. For most of its length it is separated from the Pacific Ocean by high granite mountains before breaking through a gorge. Its alluvial flats form one of the most important sugar-cane districts of Australia.
