Burgdorf

Commune in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, on the River Emme, 18 km/11 mi northeast of Bern; population (1995) 14,500. It has silk and clothmaking industries and a trade in cheese. In the castle at Burgdorf, the educational reformer Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi established his first school 1798-1804.
