Burges, William (1827–1881)

English Gothic Revival architect and designer. His style is characterized by sumptuous interiors with carving, painting, and gilding. His chief works are St Finbarr's Cathedral in Cork (1862–76), the Speech Room at Harrow School (1872), and additions to and the remodelling of Cardiff Castle (1868–85) and Castle Coch near Cardiff (1875–91).

Burges was born in London, travelled abroad, and started practice in London around 1856. He expressed his medieval tastes in the eccentric house that he designed and built for himself in Melbury Road, Kensington (1875–80).
