Burgess Hill

Town in West Sussex, England, 14 km/9 mi north of Brighton; population (2001) 28,800. Burgess Hill is a commuter town on the London to Brighton railway. It has become a centre of high technology industry and commerce and a number of international companies, such as the UK headquarters of the telecommunications company Ericssons, are located in the town.

The town initially developed through farms around the St Johns Common in the 16th century. It was subsequently home to a brick and tile industry, and handmade clay tiles are still produced in the town.

Features include a Roman Road that passes through the town, the route of which is marked by plaques on the pavements. Bedelands Farm Nature Reserve, to the north of the town, contains a range of wildlife habitats.
