Burgkmair, Hans

Burgkmair, Hans (1473–1531)

German painter and wood engraver. His woodcuts – nearly 700 in all – are remarkable both for their dramatic strength and for their faithful presentation of contemporary life. He worked for the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, in particular on the Triumph of Maximilian series (1517).

Born in Augsburg, he was a pupil of Martin Schongauer, friend and colleague of Albrecht Dürer, and father-in-law of Hans Holbein the Elder.

As a painter he enriched his colour by the study of the Venetians, and his Esther in the House of Ahasuerus (Alte Pinakothek, Munich) is an elaborate attempt to adapt an Italian type of composition, with profuse Renaissance detail of architecture and ornament.

He also illustrated a German translation of Petrarch's Latin treatise De Remediis Utriusque Fortunae.
